Tong Pak Fu (糖百府) TPF Hong Kong Dessert Burma_Road Penang

Penangites love ending their meals with something sweet, evidenced by the the increase in shops selling only desserts over the past year. We have local desserts like Sweet-i Tang Shui, 糖伯府 Tong Pak Fu Penang (the Pulau Tikus branch has since closed down), All About Sugar and many more. For Taiwan desserts we have Black ball and Meet Fresh. Enter the new era: Hong Kong desserts! Tong Pak Fu (糖百府) TPF Hong Kong Dessert has finally arrived here in Penang.

I fell in love with TPF when I visited Hong Kong back in 2010. Their snow ice items are heavenly. The Penang outlet offers a wide range of items: the award-winning snow ice, traditional hot dessert, western dessert, king of mango, sago & crystal pearls cold dessert, grass jelly cold dessert, snack food and floral tea.

Where did the name 'Tong Pak Fu' come from, you ask? There's a twist to the name - the shop is named after a very famous scholar in China, but the original chinese character for 'Tong' of the scholar's name was substituted by using a character that has the same intonation, but means 'sweet', in reference to the desserts the shop serves.
Outdoor seating for smokers or stargazers.

Their design theme is cartoon-ish.

Found these cute figurines representing the Chinese zodiac sitting on the counter.

Found mine :)

... and someone else's :)

Hanging on the wall are some of the articles published in various Hong Kong magazines.

The interior of TPF is cozy and simple.

View of the upper floor.

The best spot in the whole shop but it is outdoor seating with no air conditioning. So pretty. If there was air conditioning in this area, customers would sit here the whole day.
Hong Kong Crispy Deep Fried Fish Skin (香港酥炸脆口鱼皮) , RM8.80. This was really a good snake to had in TPF. Especially the fish soup.

Glutinous rice balls with black sesame & peanut toppings, RM4.80. The QQ balls need 15 minute waiting times but it worth the wait cause the rice balls were really good, soft and QQ. Goes really well with the fragrant sesame & peanut topping.

Black sesame cream, 芝麻 RM5.80. This is made using grade A black sesame seeds. The sesame seeds are fried, grinded and cooked with loads of patience. This was not too sweet, and the texture was smooth, fine, and rich.

Creme Brulee, RM7.80.

The burnt sugar topping was sweet and crispy, complementing the cold egg pudding perfectly. It is topped with a sour strawberry and sweet tuile. The tuile is nice and crisp, and topped with some sesame seeds.

Chocolate Lava cake with vanilla ice cream, RM12.80.

This Swiss chocolate cake has a wait time of 15 minutes.

Another hot & cold dessert. When you dig in through the middle of the warm cake, smooth chocolate liquid will ooze out.  Alternate a bite of this chocolate delight with a spoonful of vanilla ice cream, the texture and taste are simply heavenly! All the ingredients used in this dessert is imported from Switzerland.

Double-boiled snow pear with dried citrus peel, RM8.80. Both the dried citrus peel and snow pear boast the effect of cleaning phlegm and reducing cough. It is nourishing and able to relieve heat. It was not made with pure sugar but cane sugar so the soup was smooth and not overly sweet.

Mango napoleon with vanilla ice cream, RM10.80.

Sweet crispy pastry layers, along with ripe mango slices and topped off with icing sugar. It's served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a tuile on the side.

Chilled mango sago cream with pomelo and mango ice cream, RM10.80. Love this dessert, cause the bitterness from the pomelo cuts through the sweet dessert, and the QQ sago gives the dessert some extra texture. The mango ice cream adds in extra flavor and enhances the creaminess of the dessert.

Finally, here cones their signature award-winning dessert, snow ice. It is the tracka durian snow ice, RM14.80 (large).

The tracka durian pulps are sifted to remove the fibers, resulting in a fine and exquisite shaved ice dessert. The rich flavor of durian will leave  a lingering pleasant taste in your month. The tracka durian snow ice is served with cornflakes, white pearls, and herbal jelly.

Black sesame snow ice, RM7.80 (regular). This dessert, enriched with the unique and strong flavor of black sesame, is not only tasty but it is also good for the skin :) This is my all-time favorite at TPF. Must try!
Curry fish balls, RM6.80. It is not the ordinary HK curry fish balls. It is as soggy as the ones I've tried in HK, and it has a really strong curry flavor. It is a great item to have as a snack.

Thank you to TPF's boss, Eugine, for introducing us to all the delicious desserts at TPF.

Meet Fresh Gurney Paragon Penang

Meet Fresh : a tale of 2 masters, Mr. & Mrs. Fu, who were persistent in creating and preserving the traditional taste of Taiwanese desserts. And Voila! Meet Fresh was born and all of us now get to taste the handmade & freshly prepared wholesome Taiwanese desserts. I just got back from Taiwan, and this visit to Meet Fresh made me long to be back in Taiwan again.

A great place to chill out and get your Taiwanese dessert fix. They are located at the ground floor of Gurney Paragon. You won't miss the shop as it is always crowded with people at night.

Clean kitchen to ensure hygienic preparation of the yummy desserts.

They have a wide range of choices to choose from. There's something for everyone, from cold to hot, sweet QQ mochi, Tofu, beverages.. the list goes on and on. It is a great place for the whole family.

This red gadget is given to you after you place your order, and it will light up and vibrate when your order is ready. Cool right?

Great ambiance with air conditioning.

They have a lot of seating so don't worry about waiting for tables.

I always impressed  by Taiwanese tableware. Bigger spoons compare to our local spoon size.

Meet Fresh Signature Herb Jelly (Hot), RM6.90. It comes with fresh Taro balls, honey beans, pearls and roasted peanuts. I love this hot dessert because it is not too sweet and great in flavor.

This signature dessert taste great served cold as well, Meet Fresh Signature Herb Jelly (Cold), RM6.90. Herb Jelly, Herb blended ice, Taro Balls and cream. Is a plus one for adding the high quality cream. It actually improve the aroma and creaminess of the dessert. Yum! is a MUST TRY item at MEET FRESH.

Another MUST TRY item is this black & white QQ Mochi, RM8.90. Chilled, QQ, sweet & fragrant brown sugar sauce topped with crispy coconut flake. It is quite expensive though but it definitely worth every RM you spend.  MUST TRY!!!

Little taro balls in white gourd tea with cream, RM 5.90.  This beverage was not too sweet, fragrant and great for me after all the desserts I had.
